Deep-rooted jumbo culture of Sri Lanka

Dhanesh Wisumperuma

The Nation (Insight), 23.08.2015

The Nation: http://nation.lk/online/2015/08/22/deep-rooted-jumbo-culture-of-sri-lanka/

My Blog (Edited): http://dhaneshw.blogspot.com/2015/08/deep-rooted-jumbo-culture-of-sri-lanka.html

This is the perahera season. Beautifully caparisoned elephants are among the best attractions of these peraheras or the Buddhist religious processions held annually in leading religious centers around the country. They carry the relic casket as well as the nilames or the chieftains in ceremonial dresses. The number of elephants in a perahera improves the ‘state’ of it among others. The elephants are featured well in almost all tourist guides as a key feature in these processions.

However, we can see that there are protests around the country against the use of elephants in these processions. This opposition is often shown against any type of taming of wild elephants. There are two major causes for this uproar – the inhumane keeping and working conditions of the tamed elephants and the illegal capturing of the young calves reported recently. Some critics have gone so far as to demand a stop to taming of elephants all together.

It’s apparent that this resistance arises from not being rooted in one’s culture, particularly Sinhala culture. Other vested interests cannot be totally ruled out. Humans and elephants coexisted in Sri Lankan culture for a long time. They were used for various purposes since the beginnings of our recorded history. Elephants were a part of the four armies of our kings, a stately vehicle, used as a beast of burden, for religious purposes and a profitable trade item. This human-elephant relationship changed with time, and the socio-economic context of the country. It’s rooted in several characteristics of the elephant, of which a key fact is the consideration of the elephants as an auspicious animal that symbolizes good fortune.

Religious ceremonies

Allusions to the use of elephants for religious purposes such as peraheras are made in the records of the earliest parts of the country’s history. The first such incident dates back to the period of King Devanampiyatissa (250-210 BCE), during whose time Arhant Mahinda, introduced Buddhism to the country. King Devanampiyatissa wanted the relics of the Buddha to be placed in the Thuparama Stupa built by him, the first stupa of Anuradhapura and the country. He organised a procession and the relic casket which was placed on the king’s head was then placed on the back of an elephant, and taken in procession to Thuparama, as described in the chronicles Mahavamsa and Thupavamsa. This is the first occasion where an elephant was used in a procession.

There are other important instances where elephants are mentioned in processions in the past, for instance elephants were used for the festival of enshrining of relics in the relic chamber of Ruvanveliseya of Anuradhapura during the reign of King Dutugemunu (167-137 BCE). There was a procession as described in Mahavamsa, where elephants, cavalry and vehicles were an integral part of the procession.

There are few other references to use of elephants in processions throughout our history, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Kurunegala and Kandy periods, for example. It is obvious that each and every such procession held throughout history and the use of elephants in these is not mentioned in these chronicles which are essentially political histories of the country.

Meanwhile donation of elephants is also recorded in history. Several kings have donated elephants to temples and the oldest to do so was King Mahadathika Mahanaga (7-19 CE), whose donation was a symbolic one as he paid an equal value in money and released the animal thus signifying the tradition of a donation. There are other such elephant offerings by King Nissankamalla during the Polonnaruwa Period, and other kings to temples, including temples in Anuradhapura. Parakramabahu IV of early 14th century and the Kandyan kings of the 18th century Vijaya Rajasinghe and Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe offered elephants among other items to the Tooth Relic itself as mentioned in history.

Association of elephants with the Tooth Relic dates centuries back. Holding processions for the Tooth Relic was an ancient religious rite that possibly dates back to the Anuradhapura period, as suggested by researchers on this subject, based on historical records. Although the association of elephants in these processions is not mentioned specifically, since we have evidence of the use of elephants in early peraheras as mentioned above, we cannot exclude the possibility of elephant usage. A procession held during the reign of Vijayabahu IV of Dambadeniya Period mentions the use of elephants in a procession of the Tooth Relic, where elephants were also used. The 14th Century Sinhala book titled Daladasirita, mentions that the relic enshrined in a casket is taken out and placed on a decorated chariot and was pulled by a tusked elephant with auspicious marks yoked to it. Description states that this is a rule of a procession of public display of the tooth relic.

King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha ordered the procession of the Tooth Relic (Dalada Perahera) be given priority over other items of the annual Esala Maha Perahera festival to honour Lord Buddha. The use of elephants is mentioned in the vivid description of the procession in Culavamsa – the king had placed a canopy fastened on the back of the royal elephant beautifully ornamented with gold embroidery and the elephant was surrounded by other elephants. The king placed the splendid sparkling casket of gold in which the bodily relic of Lord Buddha was placed carefully under the canopy. As some have mentioned this as be the first instance where an elephant was used to carry the casket of the Tooth Relic, but we know that other relics were carried on elephants going in processions long ago, as mentioned above. Historical evidence supports the assumption that it is a continuation of a long tradition.

Finding a solution

The cultural links between humans and elephants in perahera processions are strong as evident in historical sources mentioned in above mentioned references. The use of tame elephants in Peraheras is given so much importance even at present. Hence, finding a sustainable method to ensure the use of elephants for cultural purposes while reducing the suffering of animals and ensuring their welfare is a need of the day.

These tamed elephants are usually kept chained with iron chains and caretakers are often blamed for handling these animals in a cruel manner. Chaining elephants can cause serious leg injuries to these animals, especially to the calves. This can be solved by finding alternatives to chaining like using proper roping as in the past.

Some of these animals are engaged in hard work during other times of the year – the lifting of logs and recently used in safari rides etc. Both these activities can cause the animal to suffer from physical disorders – safaris can cause serious bone injuries to the animal. This is because during the safari animals are overcrowded with tourists. With regard to such activities, elephants are used without a rest. This type of usage of elephants clearly goes against the guidelines specified in using these animals in safaris.

The ownership of private elephants brings the opportunity for the owners to earn money. They tend to generate more and more money from the elephants disregarding their welfare. This is a reason why elephants are seen engaging in safari rides. When these animals are free from routine functions owners use them for activities which can make them rich. The new rich seem to follow this trend, as opposed to the elites of the past who thought having an elephant enhanced individual status of their respective clans. Hence efforts to find humane ways of keeping elephants in custody should be looked into.

One such solution, as pointed out some time back, is to maintain a reserve of elephants by a dedicated state body solely for religious and other cultural purposes. Properly trained mahouts should be engaged in the service of these centres. Traditional methods as well as modern scientific methods can be tried out at such places. There could be more than one centre in the country. These centres could also serve as tourist attractions. The elephants owned by the temples can be kept in these centres.

New image house or aluth vihare

We turned left from the Galle Road at Telwatta Junction and proceeded along a narrow road leading towards Kiralagahawela. After crossing the Colombo-Matara railway line, we reached our destination – Totagamu Purana Ranpath Rajamaha Vihara, Telwatta. This temple is situated in the village of Telwatta in Galle District, and is in Vellboda Pattuwa as per the old division system. The temple is sometimes mentioned as Telwatta temple as it is situated in that village. Present day Totagamuwa is a village, south to Telwatta.

The temple in front of us was on a flat terrain, and it contained a quadrangular-shaped terrace, surrounded by a low wall or rampart with few gates. All sacred sites of the temple – the stupe, bo tree and image houses – were located inside this quadrangle and the dwelling houses of monks and other associated buildings were situated outside.
Totagamuwa Temple has a rich history and contains several archaeologically-important monuments, which was the aim of our visit to the temple. The bo tree

History in brief

The history of Totagamuwa Temple dates at least to late Anuradhapura period. The inscriptions with Sinhala letters dated to a period 8th to 11th centuries are found on few pillars remaining in the temple premises adjoining the devalas. These inscriptions denote the devotee who devoted those pillars, which are what is remaining from a building that stood within the present temple premises. Although the folklore on the origin of the temple can predate this date, this appears to be the oldest verifiable date of the temple.
Titthagama Vihara mentioned in the Mahavamsa is identified as the present Totagamuwa Temple. The first reference in history is to the King Vijayabahu the great, who built a building in Titthagama Vihara. Titthagama is the Pali version of the name Totagamuwa, which literary means ‘the village containing a fort or a port’. The kings of Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Kurunegala and Kotte Kingdoms have constructed various buildings, and supported the temple as mentioned in our chronicles. Vijayaba Pirivena is one such institution started during this time. The temple reached its zenith by the time of Kotte Kingdom, as a temple as well as an education institute. The temple is being described in four sandesa kavyas(messenger poems) – Tisara, Parevi, Kovul and Girasandesas. These poetic descriptions include accounts of the temple’ stupa, bo tree, image house and monks, while the pirivena and its activities are also described some of these poems.

Meanwhile, Girasandesa is written to send a message to the incumbent of this temple, who was the most notable and eminent monk to reside in this temple. He was none other than Ven. Totagamuwe Sri Rahula Thera, well-known scholarly monk of the 15th century, who authored several books and who was fluent in several languages. The state of the temple as well as the monk is elaborated in Girasandesa.

This temple flourished until the end of the 16th century, and was destroyed by the Portuguese, who launched a campaign against the Buddhist temples in the maritime areas of the country under their control. The ill-reputed campaign of Thome de Souza in 1580 destroyed several famous temples along the coastal belt and the description of this campaign includes a reference of destroying two pagodas in Madampe. It is believed that this includes Totagamuwa, as Madampe is a village located to north of Telwatta. Being a well-known and much-venerated temple located close to the coast, it is impossible to think that the Portuguese excluded this from their devastation. An inscription of late Anuradhapura period

Revival and current state

After the period of decline for few centuries, the revival of the temple was initiated during the mid-18th century, when the area was under the Dutch rule. A monk from the southern region, Ven.Pallatara Punnasara Thera, who received his higher ordination from Kandyan Kingdom was responsible for the revival of this temple in late 18th century. The current lineage of monks was commenced by this monk, and continues upto today with three distinct branches.

As mentioned above, the key religious edifices of archaeological importance are situated in the inner quadrangle. The bo tree, located close to the southern wall, is large and old and probably saved from destruction. The stupa is located in the northern corner of the premises. The two image houses, old and the new one are among the most important edifices of archaeological importance, except the pillars with inscriptions, located near the two devala buildings.

Meanwhile, there are many other edifices in the temple belonged to the 19th century or later. For instance, the belfry dates back to 1881, and the preaching hall or the Dharmasala dates to the early 20th century. There are two devale buildings in the eastern side of the quadrangle, a Visnu Devale and Tun Devale.Pancanarighata under the Makara Torana in new image house

Image houses and paintings

The parana vihare or the old image house is said to be completed in 1799 along with the revival of the temple. It contains three Buddha images and some paintings most probably dating to the period the temple was constructed. The paintings in the inner chamber seem to be older than the vestibule of the image house and common paintings such as jataka stories, like mara parajaya (the defeat of Mara).

The aluth vihare or the new image house was completed in 1805, as per the inscription above one of the inner doorways. The inner chamber contains three Buddha statues in three postures and a statue of God Vishnu. The paintings in the inner chamber and the vestibule of the image house are some of the classic works of low country art, follows the Kandyan tradition. The subject matter of these paintings is mostly the common themes used in Kandyan tradition paintings. For instance, the life events of the Buddha, such as mara parajaya, sat satiya (episodes of the seven weeks after the enlightenment) are found among paintings. Also jataka stories (stories from Buddha’s previous births) like Vessantara Jataka, Sama Jataka, Culla Dhamma pala Jataka, Sasa Jataka and Devadhamma Jataka and suvisivivarana (twenty-four proclamations) are among the paintings. Also solos mahastana (16 places of worship in Sri Lanka) are found on the walls. The statue of Kamadewa or Mara or Ananga in new image house

There are some rare and possibly unique elements among the paintings and murals. The prominent statue between the two inner doors is identified as Kamadeva(Mara) or Ananga bearing the bow is said to be unique to Totagamuwa. The elaborative display of six heavens is not seen in such descriptions while painting of five footprints of the Buddha is also said to found only in Totagamuwa. The painter as identified as Hat Korale Sittara Muhandiram. The details in paintings and the color usage of these paintings confirm the talent of the painter, and these have been cured recently by the Department of Archeology. There is a clear European influence in some of these paintings. For instance, the shape of the vase of pancanarighata painting and two figures that support the vase show such influence. Some decorative items and floral displays also show such an influence.

The date of the paintings in the new image house is a matter of disagreement. Renowned artist and art historian, LTP Manju Sri dates these paintings to 1805, based on the date of the construction of the image house. However Prof. Senaka Bandaranayake argued that these paintings are more likely to belong to mid-19th century. The presence of European influence supports this argument, with which fact we can agree with.Pillars with inscriptions

The Buddhist Heritage of Andhra Pradesh

Building hosting Buddhist Galleries at State Museum at Hyderabad

Buddhism originated in the 5th century BCE in present day India. It flourished in many parts of India for the next millennium, partly due to the patronage of various kings and dynasties. Numerous factors contributed to its decline thereafter. Today although Buddhism is not a major religion in India, there are a vast number of Buddhist sites of religious and archaeological importance in the country. Some of these are world famous, such as Bodhgaya, Sanchi and the Ajanta Caves.

Buddhism came to what is now called Andhra Pradesh, a southern state of India, in the early period and flourished there for the next few centuries. It is evident that all forms of Buddhism such as Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana found residence in this region. Although Buddhism declined in Andhra Pradesh during the latter part of the 1st Millennium CE, there is evidence to suggest some of the sites had social and religious currency until the 14th century. What remains of the above period are various ruined sites which are now considered a part of Indian ‘heritage’. Some of them are now marketed as tourist attractions.

Such ruins first grabbed the attention of scholars and colonial administrators in the late 18th century. With the stabilization of the British administration these archaeological artifacts were explored and subjected to scholarly appraisal. Archaeology authorities of post-independent India continued this tradition in various parts of the country, including Andhra Pradesh. A small but detailed booklet titled ‘Buddhist Archaeology in Andhra Pradesh’ published a few years ago sketches out the story of these discoveries.

There are a total of approximately 150 Buddhist monuments and other sites identified within the present boundaries of Andhra Pradesh so far. These sites contain monuments of various types, including stupas and large monasteries and cave complexes. Quite interestingly, Buddhist sites are being discovered even at present. A new Buddhist site was discovered as recently as a few weeks ago on the banks of the Gosthani River, at Gudiwada village of Bhogapuram Mandal in the Vizianagaram District. The site has been identified as belonging to the early periods of Buddhism and was reported in ‘The Hindu’ newspaper on October 9, 2012. In 2010, remains of stupa were found under the foundations of a Hindu shrine, which speaks of what happened to some of the sites after the decline of Buddhism. The wanton destruction of some of these sites has been recorded by British archaeologists.

The most celebrated sites

Some of the Buddhist sites in Andhra are renowned for historical and \archaeological significance, in particular Nagarjunakondda and Amaravati. In addition a large number of relic caskets have being unearthed from a number of Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh. These sites, sometimes known as ‘relic casket sites’, include Battiprolu, Bavikonda, Ghantasala, Salihundam, Gudivada, Guntupalli, Jaggayyapeta and Kottur. Some writers opine that Andhra Pradesh is the state with the highest density of relic caskets.

Amaravati is another famous Buddhist site located close to the Krishna River and is believed to date to around the 3rd century BCE. The large mahastupa was originally built by King Ashoka while many other buildings are said to have been constructed over at least four phases. The Amaravati ruins first caught the attention of scholars in the late 19th century and a number of collections of artifacts from Amaravati complex are exhibited in a number of museums around the world. Relic caskets were discovered here during the excavations conducted during the period of 1957-67 at the mahastupa site. It is said that there is evidence to state that a Mahayanic site was later transformed into a Tantric Vajrayana site. The style of sculpture style is in fact referred to as the Amaravati School of Art or Amaravati Sculpture and is well known for its narrative style. The influence of Amaravati art is said to spread to other areas including Sri Lanka.
Nagarjunakonda is an ancient Buddhist monastery complex situated on the banks of the Krishna River. It was a prominent center of learning during ancient times and takes its name from the scholarly monk Nagarjuna who lived during the 2-3rd centuries and was resident here. He is considered a great philosopher monk and founded the Madhyamika School of Buddhism, which belongs to the Mahayana tradition. The present site is said to have been earlier called Sriparvata and the present name in Telugu means ‘Hill of Nagarjuna’. Numerous Buddhist remains have been excavated since its discovery in 1926. The remains unearthed include a mahastupa, remains of several monasteries and numerous artifacts including inscriptions and sculptures. As the original site was inundated with water during the construction of Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir built in 1960s, these have been reconstructed on higher locations close by.
There are many important sites which are lesser known to the outside world, such as Bavikonda, situated close to Visakapatnam on the eastern coast. According to records, Bavikonda contains the remains of a mahastupa, several other stupas and congregation halls, evidencing clearly a well-established monastery complex. Conservation work on the mahastupa was carried out in 1993 and yielded caskets believed to contain relics of Siddhartha Gauthama, the Enlightened One, which are exhibited at Hyderabad Museum.

Hyderabad Museum – The showcase of the Buddhist Heritage

The State Archaeological Museum of Hyderabad has a good collection of Buddhist finds. The two main galleries of the museum are dedicated to these. Gallery 1 is the ‘Holy Buddhist Relic Gallery’ holding relics found from the ancient Buddhist monastery complex of Bavikonda. The next gallery is the ‘Buddhist Sculpture Gallery’ where sculptures, decorative dome panels and statues found in various parts of the state are exhibited. Buddha statues in display belong to the Amaravati School of Art. They contain material mainly from Nelakondapally, Chandavaram, Bavikonda and Uppugundur. However some of these are classic works of limestone. Some of the vandalized or mutilated parts of these artifacts constitute silent evidence of what took place during the course of history.

A third gallery is dedicated to copies of Ajanta Paintings done about sixty years ago. These copies were made during the administration of Nizams of Hyderabad in 1949. Two artists, namely Khan Bahadur Syed Ahmed and Jalaluddin, were commissioned by the Nizam to undertake this monumental task.

Buddhism today

There is a small population of Buddhists living in Andhra Pradesh, numbering around 32,000 according to the census of 2001. This is quite small when we consider the total number Buddhists in India, i.e. about 8 million. Buddhism seems to be part of the culture in Andhra Pradesh. Buddhist tourism is being promoted by the Andhra Pradesh government and tourism authorities. They call it ‘Ancient Buddhist Bastion’ in their promotional materials. There are festivals sponsored by the state authorities as well. The Department of Tourism and Culture and the Department of Archaeology and Museums celebrate Buddha Purnima (or Vesak) every year in Hyderabad. They had once even taken relics on a procession to mark this event.

The well-known Ananda Buddha Vihara is a temple located in the Mahendra Hills in Hyderabad and is the center for the propagation of Buddhism in the state today. The Buddha statue mounted on a small island in Hussain Sagar Lake was built as a part of ‘Buddha Purnima Project’ implemented in 1980s is also a prominent landmark in Hyderabad. Both attract tourists, local and foreign.

A different zoo and a village of culture at Hyderabad

Dhanesh Wisumperuma

The Nation, 11-11-2012, Undo p. 4-5
http://www.nation.lk/edition/undo/item/12328-a-different-zoo-and-a-village-of-culture-at-hyderabad.html

Hyderabad is a city with multiple attractions, where a visitor may struggle to decide what to see and where to visit. I am intended to write on two interesting places which I was able to visit during my short stay in Hyderabad – mainly due to the special characters I saw there. Those are the Nehru Zoological Park, a zoo beyond a regular one we know and the Shilparamam, the arts and crafts village depicting India.

Animal-friendly zoo

The Nehru Zoological Park, which is also known as the Hyderabad Zoo, is situated at an spacious location in the southern part of the city, adjacent to the Mir Alam Tank, a man made reservoir. The zoo covers an area of about 380 acres and is often mentioned as one of the largest in India. It was established between 1959 and 1963 and opened in 1963 and named after Jawaharlal Nehru.

The most important feature of the zoo is its spacious nature. Since it is a well-planned zoo, the animals are provided with ample space. Many of the animals are kept in open spaces encircled by short walls of about a meter in height. There is a ditch between the wall and the animal. The trees were maintained without overhanging branches in case of arboreal animals like the monkeys and apes. The area where the animals are kept was mostly covered with trees and grass thus providing a shade for the animal. A manmade cave like hide is available for the animals at a corner of their compound. A very few of the animals are caged, i.e. the birds, reptiles, etc. Even some of the nocturnal animals like the loris are kept in an open ‘room’ inside the darkened nocturnal house.

For instance, the elephants have an area that is about 30 acres to roam freely. There are shelters for elephants, which are not accessible to the normal visitor. Some of the elephants in these shelters are released to this space in rotation and they could wander freely in the space and feed on the vegetation. However, an officer of the zoo said us that they provide the elephants with food as the amount of food required by an elephant are large.
The authorities have taken steps to consider the requirements of the animals very cautiously. For instance, the rhinoceros was kept in a large compound, where there are different pools – one with water and another with mud.
With the increased space for the animals, the stress among these captive animals may be reduced and can increase the lifetime of the animals. The arrangement of the zoo is visitor friendly. Almost all animals are kept in such a setting provides an important aspect as the visitors are able to see the animals at their eye-level. This facilitates the observation of the animals and thus increases the educational value of the zoo.

Another attraction in the park is the Jurassic Park. It contains large models of the animals that lived during the Jurassic Era – the dinosaurs. They are labeled with adequate information for the visitor and the landscape is arranged to resemble or mimic the plant life of that period. It seemed to be an attraction among the visitors. The reptile enclosure and the nocturnal house are among other sections visited by most.

There is a safari park where lions and tigers are living freely and visitors take a tour by bus, just like a safari available in a sanctuary or a national park. The vegetation is bit dense in the area and the spotting of animals is little difficult and is like in the natural environment. According to the staff, although there are some herbivores living in the safari area, the tigers and lions are not feeding on them and food for them is provided. It seems that their interest in hunting had been reduced, or they have adapted for the ‘free meal!’

Another interesting feature of the zoo is the transportation within the zoo - battery operated eco-friendly vehicles and a train service is available within the zoo. Wide road network and the park like appearance ease the visitor. Although we spent half a day, I did not felt tired. It was mainly due to the spacious nature and the landscape that provided shade and green. It was a relieved tour, which I never experienced in a Sri Lanka’s zoo. Although the number of the animal species seen at the Nehru zoo is below what you can see in another zoo, it is a friendly place for animals and visitors. I experienced the difference
As we are aware, there are other zoological gardens being planned and built in Sri Lanka, the Nehru Zoological Park of Hyderabad can provide guidance. We were fascinated to hear that there are occasional visits by Sri Lankan authorities. If zoos are required (I think so, for the educational use), it should be more animal friendly.

Colorful village in the city

A venue encircled by a mud colored low wall with a white pattern on it attracted our attention towards it. There were no multistory buildings in the site and tree cover could be seen on the premises which are situated in the middle of the Hi-tech city area of the town, the main industrial and business area of the city – the IT hub. It looked calm and was similar to a park or a recreational area within the busy city. On inquiry I found that it was called ‘Shilparamam’, meaning literary ‘home for the crafts’, the arts, crafts and cultural village in Hyderabad. It is often mentioned as a showcase of India’s cultural heritage.

Shilparamam was established in 1992 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It expands to 65 acres and is maintained by the Ministry of Tourism. In short, Shilparamam contains of multiple ventures: it is a permanent exhibition of arts, crafts and lifestyles of people; a sales centre of crafts and arts, a recreation venue for the people, a park and an open stage, etc. I had the opportunity visit it twice and take this opportunity to describe at a least few aspects of the many aspects of arts, crafts and culture of India.

A large area is dedicated to display permanent life sized models of how the traditional lives of people in the country are. The livelihoods, rituals and day-to-day events associated with the culture and crafts are presented in the relevant background. These included the potter house, village artisans, tribal lifestyles, kalahasti wood carving, cherial painting are among the most interested. Various cultural events such as sankranti festival, tulsi pooja and day-to-day life events of the people like the scene of village bazaar are present. These models are self-explanatory and one can understand how traditional arts and crafts function in rural areas. It is actually a cultural show!
While walking around the premises, I suddenly saw a Buddha statue on a lotus pedestal. There were two Buddha statues in fact. It was at the ‘Sculpture Park’ where a collection of various sculptures are displayed. The most interesting was the materials used to make those pieces of art. Some were made out of granite and some seemed to be of plaster, but there was a material rarely used for this type of artwork. Some of the sculptures were made out of welding scrap metal like parts of vehicles, equipment and waste metal pieces, which are otherwise usually dumped. The themes of these sculptures varies largely and included plants, animals, equipment as well as conceptual representations. The artist’s name is also displayed along with the sculpture and the park seemed to be a new addition to the park and opened in September 2012. I noticed that similar sculpture of metal pieces even within the Hyderabad City – it resembles that that the city is more industrial.

There was a unique exhibition of traditional breeds of oxen held at Shilparamam in parallel to the International Biodiversity Summit held in Hyderabad. We were able to see about 23 breeds of the varieties found in India. This rich livestock diversity is somewhat threatened at global level, due to the introduction of developed varieties of animals and it was a topic of discussion during the summit.
There was an area allocated for stalls selling various items, pearl and other jewelry, cloths, craft items, ornamental items, toys and as well as food. Most of these were made by the local people and it was a direct marketing facility for the producers.

The premises is beautifully landscaped and provided shaded avenues for people to walk without being tired in the daytime. Various types of plants are seen used to beautify the environment and some sections are still under improvement. The large and small rocks and mountainous landscape are used as attractive features of the location. Many of the stalls as well as the administrative buildings inside Shilparamam are designed to suit the park. The venue also provided a variety of entertainment facilities for the visitor – shaded avenues, the tank with boating facilities, party venues and the open theater are among those.

A fairly a large crowd both local and foreign gathers at this place escaping their urban lifestyle. The Shiparamam looked like a very different place. It is a must at Hyderabad. Details about the village could be found on www.shilparamam.org, its official website.
